SNEAK PEEK

“Dominique, please. Hear us out,” Dad said.
“No! You hear ME out! You brought me to this stupid city, and I hate it here! Everything about this place sucks, and now, because of you, I’m crazy!” Tear trickled down my face, and I wiped them away fast. “Okay? Fucking crazy! And it’s all your fault!”
Instantly I bit my lip because I regretted my words, but they were out already. Besides, they needed to know how pissed I was.
Dad paced the room. “You have every right to be upset, Dominique. We never meant for any of this to happen.”
I didn’t even notice Farrell at my side until he took my hand.  “Dominique, I told you. You’re not crazy.”

My head began to swoon. My knees buckled. Every time I was near Farrell, a funny feeling came over me. Sometimes it was a subtle dizziness, other times a tingle throughout my body, but always the feeling warmed me. Calmed me. And seemed so natural and familiar.
“What are you doing to me?” I whispered.

EXCERPT

There was an ache. A gnawing, raw, festering ache that burned in her belly. Her head pounded, her limbs were sore and heavy. Emily laid prone, face first in a pile of pillows on what felt like a soft plush bed. She ran her fingertips over the smooth cool unfamiliar silk of bed linens.  She slowly began to drift more into consciousness. Panic and fear rose up inside her as she tried to open her eyes and raise her head.

Emily was startled by a man sitting in a large ornate red chair. The dark wood that framed the crimson fabric curved up and out and reminded her of a painting she’d once seen in her Aunt Lucinda’s house. The man looked like he was in his mid-forties, with flecks of gray in his inky black hair. His skin was pale, and his eyes were dark and serious. And trained on her. His clasped hands rested under his pointy chin.

If it wasn’t for the faint deathly smell that hung in the air around him or the bone-chilling knowledge of what he must be, Emily thought he could be considered handsome, distinguished even.

Vampire. That word made her shiver.  She wasn’t even sure how she knew. But after seeing Curtis last night, after feeling his unnaturally cold touch, his pale skin and black eyes, his fangs pierce her skin—

She swallowed hard.  Did that really happen?  She stared at this man across from her and wondered for a minute how old he really was.

He stared at her, unblinking, for a long time. His dark ebony eyes silently studied her and his lips pressed into a thin white line.  Emily didn’t move. She could barely expand her lungs enough to breathe.  And it wasn’t just because of the uncertainty that surrounded her, the terror bubbling up just below the surface. The intensity of his stare, the voracious greed she could feel rolling off of him prickled her skin, sent a chill down her spine, and curdled in her gut.

She knew he wanted something from her.

Without warning, the same sharp intense pain that had been aching inside her, stabbed at her as Luke’s face flashed in her mind. Luke, she thought. The weight of his name on her tongue was almost too much to bear.  An emotion she couldn’t even name—longing? fear?—seemed to press down on her chest. She suddenly felt hungry. Hungry for him, for his warmth, his arms. The memory of the feel of his lips on her skin, of his arms wrapped around her, of being pressed up against his chest burned along her skin.

Where was he? What had happened?

Emily nervously cleared her throat, her voice shaky as she asked, “What do you want with me?”

Exclusive Excerpt!
Somewhere, James was just as trapped as I was.
I thought of the morning when we lay with each other, curled against one another, never beginning and never ending. How we’d stayed like that till the sun began to rise.
James had reached down and pulled me off the ground. He wore a satisfied grin on his face. “Someone is mighty proud of himself,” I teased.
He laughed. It bounced through the forest, calling it awake. Readying it for the day. “I’m just insanely happy.”
I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed him gently on his scar. “I’m insanely happy too,” I whispered.
James looked down at me, and I was lost all over again. I would never tire of looking into those mismatched eyes. They didn’t make him different. They made him him. He chuckled as he reached over and pulled a leaf from my tangled hair. “They’ll know just by looking at you that we’ve been up to no good.”
“No good?” I purred. “I thought it was very, very good.”
James growled and lifted me into the air. I wrapped my legs around his waist as he pressed his lips hungrily against mine. I moved my hands to his hair, curling my fingers into it, attaching myself to him. I never wanted to let go. Every part of me ached to be touched by him, and every part of me ached to touch him right back.
“Do you know how much I love you?” he breathed into the base of my neck. His lips fluttered against my skin.
I nodded, kissing the top of his head. “As much as I love you.”
James slowly put my feet back on the ground. He cradled my face in his hands. “That will never change. No matter what.”
I looked deep into his eyes. “I know.” Because I did. It was one of life’s few assurances. I would always love James.
I pressed my lips once again to his scar. “I adore this scar,” I whispered, unable to hide the smile that seemed etched on my face all morning.
“You’re enough to drive a man crazy,” he said The tremble of his voice caused my toes to curl. I wanted him again. And again. And again.
My fingers traced the waist of his pants. “Tonight?” I said, knowing full well it was a promise that I probably wouldn’t be able to keep.
James grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips. “Tonight,” he echoed.
As the sun climb higher into the sky, I knew our moment was coming to an end. James reached down and placed his hand over my heart. “Thank you,” he said.
“For what?” I asked, my voice choked with emotion.
            “For everything.”
As the memory slipped away, I looked back up at the night sky. Praying and hoping that James knew how much I wanted to thank him too.
            For everything.

BOOK BLAST + GIVEAWAY: NEVER TOO FAR by Thomas Christopher

Never Too Far
by Thomas Christopher
Kindle Edition, 272 pages
Published May 10th 2012 by Kalmaha Press

A harrowing story of love and survival.

In a future of scarce resources, where the possession of gas and diesel is punishable by death, a teenage boy and a pregnant girl must save their impoverished family. They risk their lives on a terrifying journey to sell stolen fuel on the black market.

Mary surprised Joe by knocking his arms away. She was stronger than she looked. Then she swept her legs off the bed and sprang to her feet. She took two steps and turned to face him as if to prove there was nothing wrong with her. But there was definitely something wrong. She wavered a moment. Her already white face turned ghostly. Her eyelids trembled. She seemed to realize she was becoming faint, and what that meant.

“I’m fine,” she said. “You don’t have to go.”

Joe got ready to catch her in case she fell, but somehow she held herself steady.

“It’s okay,” Joe said. “Just sit down. I will go find some food.”

Joe inched toward her. He was afraid to grab her again because she might try to wrench free once more and really fall. When she coughed, her little shoulders jerked and her round stomach jumped. Her head was drooped low and her hair hung down so he couldn’t see her face at all.

“Come on, lay down,” Joe said.

She didn’t move. Joe stepped toward her, but before he could put his arms around her, she tilted forward and rested the crown of her head against his chest. He slid his arms along the sides of her hard belly and around her waist. Then he shifted her toward the bed again. She moved like a bundle of empty sacks in his arms. He set her gently on the bed before he bent down to lift her feet onto the sheets.

After he sat in the chair, Mary asked him, “What if you don’t come back?”

“That’s not going to happen,” Joe said.

“How do you know?”

“I just know. You have to trust me.”

What people are saying about Losing Francesca by J.A. Huss!

“A ‘you must drop everything and read this’ kind of story.” – Author Alexia Purdy @ http://alexiaepurdy.blogspot.com/

“…this book is so sweet and full of emotions and I loved it. I couldn’t stop reading.” – Lola @ Lola’s Reviews!

This. Was. Great!!!!! It was amazing! I loved it!” – Kimberly @ Kimberly’s Novel Notes!

I lie back on the beach and put my hands behind my head. “So, we’re gonna spend the whole summer hanging out and I’m not allowed to get to know you even in the most basic and simple ways? Is that how this is gonna go, Fee?”

She lies back next to me and turns on her side, her eyes searching mine. “Why do you insist that I am her? I’m not her, Brody. This fact will hurt you if you don’t accept it and I don’t want to hurt you. You’re nice, I like you, but I’m not that girl.”

“I want you to be her.” I tell her truthfully. “I so, so want you to be her, Francesca. I cannot even explain how much I want to talk to her again. How much I want to tell her about all the days we never shared, to tell her that I thought of her at the end of every single one of them and that I prayed to God for years, every night, on my fucking knees, that she’d come back. I want to give her the Fruit Roll-Up I brought to school that first day back after summer vacation. That stupid Fruit Roll-Up that I still have hidden away, because I had this faith as a kid. This unwavering faith that only a kid can have that one day my friend would be back. And when she finally showed up, I’d give her that stupid snack to show her how much I missed her. And to prove myself to her. Because that little girl was my soulmate.”

She frowns so deep it makes me hold my breath.

“I’m sorry,” I say, turning my head to stare up at the sky. “I shouldn’t tell you this stuff, I’m sorry.” I’m projecting, that’s what I’m doing. I want Francesca to be my Fee so bad I’m starting to believe it myself, even as she sits here and tells me straight up she’s not her.

Her hand touches my cheek and I look back over.

“You can ask me one question, but it can’t be about my other life.”

I laugh. “What good does that do me?”

“Well, you can ask about things, but not my family, or school, or the places I’ve lived.”

“Give me a for example, because I’m not seeing the difference.”

She sighs and turns away, biting on her thumbnail a little. “OK,” she says, turning back. “For example, I’ll ask you the first question and you answer, then I’ll answer the same question for you.”

I smile.

She chews on her bottom lip this time. Clearly she is nervous. “All right, tell me about the best day of your life.”

I sit up and stare down at her. “The best day of my life?”

She nods.

“Today, Fee. The best day of my life is today.”

{Book Blast} 15 Minutes by Jill Cooper – Excerpt + Giveaway

Paperback
Published June 15th 2013

I have 15 minutes to save my mother’s life….

15 minutes is all the Rewind Agency gives you in the past, but for Lara Crane it’s enough time to race through the city, find her mother, and stop her from being killed in a mugging that happened over ten years ago.

But that’s not how it happened. The story she’s been told all her life is a lie and when Lara takes a bullet meant for her mother, her future changes forever.

The love of her life acts like a stranger. Her simple life is replaced with a giant house, glamorous clothes and a new boyfriend.

Except someone knows her secret. And he will try to stop her at every turn as she races against the clock to unravel a dangerous conspiracy.

15 Minutes is an edgy high octane YA thriller that can be described as Back to the Future meets Inception where the people Lara trusts change in an instant. She is in a timeline she doesn’t understand, and is about to make one fatal mistake as she faces an enemy so familiar, he’s family.

“She’s my mother,” my voice quivers. I close my eyes when he touches my cheek. “Ever since the first time I went back on my birthday—I can’t stop thinking about her, Rick.” I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

He nuzzles my cheek, and I feel his warming breath against my skin. I’m safe, comfortable.

“I saw how she was with me,” I whisper, because if I have to be any louder I won’t be able to go on. “I was a baby, and I saw how much she loved me. She sang to me. My dad—-we were all so happy.” I shake my head. “That’s what I want. I need that. He does too.”

Rick’s eyes soften. “And if you’re successful, you know things will change.”

“Of course I do. I’ll have my mom.”

“Not that.” He glances away, pain etched on his face. “Your life will change. Our life.”

My brow furrows. “What are you trying to say?”

“What if we don’t know each other anymore? What if we lose each other?”

The idea quickens my pulse. I brush his soft hair off his brow. “It won’t. Nothing could change how I feel about you.”

Doubt mars his face. I lean forward and brush my lips against his. Passion comes quick as our lips part, searching each other. I wrap my arms around his neck as he lifts his body onto the bed beside me. He kisses my jaw and rests his head against mine.

“I don’t want to lose our future, Lara. Are you willing to risk everything you know for this?”

Rather than answer him, I lay my head on his shoulder. He wraps his arms around me. I’m cocooned and safe.

Despite it all, the answer is yes.
